As an expectant parent, the checklist of things to prepare before baby comes can be overwhelming. As you get started with nursery decor, we’ve put together our top 7 reminders for designing your baby’s space, along with a giveaway (prize pack worth over $200) to help you make it beautiful.
7 Reminders for Nursery Design
1. Consider what you already own
Make a mental inventory of what you already own and would love to include in your nursery so that when you start brainstorming ideas, you’ll have these items in mind.
2. Get inspired
Pinterest is full of nursery decor inspiration. Start by creating a Pinterest board of your ideas while keeping your ‘inventory’ in mind, and then slowly narrow down your ideas to what fits into your budget and what might be available and realistic when you start shopping.
3. Pull a theme from a favorite element
With so many great ideas floating around, it’s sometimes useful to select one piece to pull a theme from (ie. a fabric you love, a special piece of art, an heirloom wall hanging) as a starting off point so that the nursery will look pulled together.
4. Know the dimensions of your space
It’s important before you start shopping to know what you’re working with. Take the time to measure your nursery room. One trick is to play around with the layout of your space by using newspaper pasted to the sizes of furniture you’re considering. Don’t forget to bring your measurements along when you’re out shopping as well.
5. Think long-term
Plan your room and choose pieces that will transition to baby’s next stages, such as a changing table that converts into a dresser for when baby becomes a toddler.
6. Consider storage
It won’t be long before baby starts accumulating ‘stuff’ - gifts, toys, etc, so think about including functional storage to help keep the room uncluttered and your mind at ease when things get chaotic. Any products for the changing table should also be stored within easy reach for you but out of your little one’s reach.
7. Pick your paint last
Since you can virtually find a paint color to suit any theme or match any fabric, it’s best to make choosing your wall color last, rather than the other way around. Also, for baby’s safety (and your own), make sure to use a water-based paint with low VOCs, and wait 2-3 days before you or baby move in.
